Saurashtra is a region of Gujarat in India. Saurashtra also known as United States of Kathiawar, was a state of India from that existed between 1948 and 1956, on Saurashtra like as Kathiawar Peninsula, with Rajkot as it’s capital, on territory now part of Gujarat state. Saurashtra was originally named the United state of Kathiawar. It was formed on 15 February 1948. The name of state was given after the Kathiawar and Saurashtra region, both of which generally denote the same geographical region of lands on the main Peninsula of Gujarat. It’s located on the Arabian Sea coast. It’s covers about a third of Gujarat state notably 11 district of Gujarat, including, Rajkot district. Saurashtra Peninsula is bound on the south and south West by the Arabian Sea, on the north west -West by the Gulf of Kutch and on the east by the Gulf of Khambhat. From the apex of these two gulf, the Little Rann of Kutch and Khambhat, waste tract half salt morass half sandy desert, stretch inland towards each other and complete the isolation of Kathiawar, except one narrow neck which connects it on the north east with the mainland of Gujarat. The Peninsula is sometimes referred to as Kathiawar after the kathi Darbar, which once ruled most the region. However Saurashtra is not entirely synonymous with Kathiawar, since a small portion of the historical Saurashtra region extend beyond the Kathiawar Peninsula, Sortha from the southern portion of the peninsula.
Saurashtra and it’s prakrit named Sortha, literally means ‘good country ‘. The name finds mention in the Junagadh Rock inscription dating 150CE, attributed to Rudradaman. Dwarkadhish Temple – One of the four Dhams. Dwarka was the kingdom of Lord Krishna. The sandstone plinth and walls of the temple are embellished with panel depicting dancer, elephants, musicians and celestial beings.
