Delhi, the nation’s capital is always brimming with extreme energy with political and cultural happenings. There are many temples in Delhi, that have been beautifully and tastefully crafted and have ever since remained the talk of the town. There is a sizable population of Hindu, Jain and Buddhist temples in Delhi along with a small number of shrines that belong to different belief, in short there is a temple on each nook and cranny of Delhi. Here we bring you the most famous temples in Delhi, that you must visit.
1. Birla Mandir – It is called Birla Mandir because it was built by the famous industrialist B. D Birla in 1938. It was built in response sandstone and white marble, the temple is a beautiful sight to behold. The actual name of the temple is Laskminarayan Temple. It was located on the Mandir Marg at Cannought place and is dedicated to goddess Lakshmi and Lord Vishnu. There are also beautiful foundation in the temple. There is a huge horse drawn chariot built in marble which add to the splendor of the temple.
2 . Hanuman Mandir – The temple is also in the Guinness book of the world records for continuous chanting of ‘Sri Ram, Jai Ram ‘. Hanuman Mandir is one of the ancient temple as it is believed that the temple was built during the time of Mahabharata. The architecture of the temple is also a quiet beautiful and the ceiling of the temple has various image of Lord Ram.
3. Kalka JI Mandir – Kalka JI Mandir is one of the oldest temples in the country and in Delhi as it was built in 1764AD. The temple was dedicated to goddess Kali. Thousands of devotees visit the temple daily and during Navratri festival in the month of October. The temple is nearest metro station is also named after the temple Kalka JI Metro Station.
4. Lotus Temple – The temple is built in the shape of a lotus and built in marble with 72 lotus petals, all looking divine in white. Lotus temple is a unique and it’s kind of temples in the entire country. It was built as per the Bahai concept, which welcomes all religions. There is a large prayer hall and people can sit and meditate here and pray to their God. The Lotus Temple can be reached either from Kalkaji metro or Nehru place metro. The temple was opened for visitors in 1986.
5. ISKCON Temple – The temple was built in 1998 and has a unique way of worship. ISKCON Temple is one of the most visited temple in Delhi and is a massive structure dedicated to Lord Krishna and is located on Hare Krishna Hill in the eastern part of Kailash. The main attraction of the temple is its impressive and beautiful architecture. The nearest metro is the Nehru place.
6. Akshardham Temple – It is one of the modern temple and it was built in 2005. It is one of the best attraction of Delhi. It is largest Hindu temple in the world and it was located on NH24. In this temple are beautiful garden, theatre, hall and more. It is built entirely using marble and stones and no metal has been used in the construction.
7. Shri Sheetla Mata Mandir – It is also one of the most popular temple of Delhi. Sheetla Mata is believed to be the wife of Dronacharya, the Guru of Pandavas. It was located the road’s name after the temple and is near to the Gurgaon railway station.
8. Outub Minar – It was built by Outub-Ud-Din Aibak. Qutub Minar is the second tallest monument in Delhi. Here Qutub Minar complex has many other ancient structures, as, Quwwat-Ut-Islam masque, Alai Darwaza (it is main gateway from the southern side of Qutwwa-ud-islam, built by Ala-Ud-Din Khilji in 1311AD ), Iron Pillar (the pillar constructed by Chandragupta II), Alai Minar (Ala-Ud-Din Khilji started building the Alai Minar ). The first storey of the Alai Minar still stands today at Qutub complex and other monuments like the Tomb of Adham Khan, Moti Masjid and Zafar Mahal.
9. Delhi Zoo – The Zoo is situated near the Old Fort in Delhi. It was favourite weekend part. It also known as National Zoological Park, the park is well maintained and is largely visited by tourists. In 1982 it was renamed The National Zoological Park . It also holds conservation breeding programme for Asiatic Lions, Royal Bangal Tiger, Brow Antlered Deer, Swamp Deer, Indian rhinoceros and red jungle fowl.
10. Red Fort – It is formerly known as Oila-e-Mubarka or the Blessed Fort. It was a part of the medieval city of Shah Jahan bad popularly known today as, old Delhi. It became a UNESCO WORLD heritage site in 2007. It was main residence of the emperor’s of Mughal dynasty. It was constructed by Shah Jahan in 1939, it’s impregnable red sandstone walls. It was ceremonial and political centre of the Mughal state and the setting for event critically impacting the region. Ever year, the Prime Minister unfurls the national flag here on the independence day.
11. India Gate – India Gate is famous for hosting the Republic Day Parade every year. It was dedicated to 82,000 Indian and British soldiers who died during the First World War. The promises of India Gate also houses the Amar Jawan Jyoti, which is a kindled structure right underneath the archway. The place is rich of historical background and astonished architecture. India Gate has become one of the most popular picnic spots in the city. It was located along the Rajpath in New Delhi. Structure of India Gate is on awe-inspiring sight and is often compared to the Arch de Triumphed in France. This 42 meters tall historical structure was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and is one of the largest war memories in the country.
12. Waste to Wonder Park – The park was located near Nizammudin Metro Station. It was inaugurated at Rajiv Gandhi Smiriti Van. The latest addition to Delhi’s list of attractions. Waste Wonder Park was triggered by Kota’s Seven Wonder Park after it was featured in the Bollywood movie ‘Badrinath ki Dulhania ‘. The South in Delhi Municipal corporation (SDMC ) has harness wind and solar energy to light up the park rendering a breathtaking sight during sunset and night. One of its kind theme park in the world.
13. Jantar Mantar, Delhi – It was built by Maharaja Jai Singh in1724 and forms a part of a collection of five such observations located in Jaipur, Ujjain, Varanasi and Mathura. It was located in Parliament Street, south Cannought circle of New Delhi. The place improved open the studies of time and space as was known.
14. Rashtrapati Bhavan – It was one of the largest residence of any head of the state in the world. This majestic piece of architecture was conceptualised by renowned architecture Sir Edwin Lutyens and Herber Baker. It’s current inhabitant is president Ram Nath Kovind who assumed office in July 2017. It was located on the western end of the Rajpath in New Delhi. It was built covering 5acres. The Bhavan has been divided into three circuits, the first one is the Main Building and central Laws, the second circuit is the Rashtrapati Bhawan Museum complex, third circuit comprises of the marvellous Mughal Garden which is a paradise of elegant garden and lush greenery.
